چکیده

Currently, there are approximately 80 million CT examinations [1] performed in the United States annually. This means that each patient is exposed to about 1013 photons/cm2 during the CT scan and most photon and their secondary electrons have a kinetic energy, which is higher than the ionization potential of patients DNA in cells. To date, due to the increasing number of CT examinations worldwide, the risk of getting cancer has been further increased. According to the literature, direct action of ionizing radiation (e.g. direct cell hits) is seen as less important, because about 2/3 of DNA damage is originated by indirect action of ionizing radiation (e.g. hydroxyl radicals). However, the damage to human DNA by X-ray imaging is a stochastic and also a quantum mechanical process. Therefore, more theoretical and medical physicists should investigate this topic.

Idarubicin-bromelain combination sensitizes cancer cells to conventional chemotherapy

Objective(s): The primary cytotoxic effects of anticancer drugs like idarubicin, a chemotherapeutic agent, are not limited to neoplastic cells; they also produce similar effects in normal cells. In this study, we hypothesized that the combination of idarubicin-bromelain could make cancer cells more susceptible to cytotoxicity and genotoxicity.Material...

Evaluation of DNA damage in Cyprinus carpio (L. 1758) exposedto malathion using Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis

Malathion (S-(1, 2-dicarboethoxyethyl) O, O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate) is one of the organophosphate pesticides comprehensively used in agriculture fields throughout the world. In spite of widely used, little information are available about DNA damage in aquatic organisms. Therefore, the present study carried out to investigation of DNA damage induced by malathion in Cyprinus carpio (Pisces: ...

Valproic Acid-Mediated Reduction of DNA Double-Strand Break Reparation Capacity of Irradiated MCF-7 Cells

Introduction H istone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs), as  radiation sensitizing agents, are considered as a novel class of anti-cancer factors, which are studied in various tumor cell-lines. Valproic acid (VPA) is an HDI, which is effectively used in the treatment of epilepsy, migraines, and some particular types of depression. In this study, we evaluated the effects of VPA and ionizing radiatio...

Comparison and evaluation of dosimetric and radiobiological parameters in two different treatment plans in stomach cancer by use of 3D CRT

Introduction: In 3DCRT the number of therapeutic fields has dramatic impact on treatment results especially in stomach cancer. Traditionally, for radiotherapy of stomach cancer the therapeutic procedure was using two fields (AP- PA or AP Lateral with wedge) to achieve smooth and homogeneous dose distribution in tumor. But nowadays, adding lateral or oblique fields to aforement...
